VW Touareg code entry

Turn the radio on and wait for SAFE to clear and 1000 to show. Use preset buttons 1 to 4 to set each digit of your code, then press and hold the right arrow (or SCAN / ENTER on touchscreen units) until the radio unlocks.

Which radio does my VW Touareg have?

The VW Touareg 7L and 7P (2002–2018) was fitted with the RCD 500, RCD 510, RNS 510, RNS 850. The model name is printed on the front of the radio, and your serial number tells us exactly which unit it is.

What does a VW Touareg radio serial look like?

It is 14 characters long and starts with VWZ, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567. You'll find it on the sticker on the radio casing.

Why does my VW Touareg radio say SAFE?

SAFE means the anti-theft lock is active because the radio lost power, for example after a flat battery or battery change. If SAFE stays on the screen after wrong attempts, leave the radio powered on for about an hour and it will reset.

Will my code still work after a battery change?

Yes. The code belongs to the radio unit and never changes. Keep it with your car documents and you can reuse it any time the battery is disconnected.

Can I get the code from my VIN?

No. Volkswagen radio codes are tied to the radio serial number, not the vehicle VIN. You'll need to read the serial from the radio label.

What if my code does not work?

Double-check the serial, especially the letter I versus the number 1. If the serial is correct and the code still fails, contact us and we will recheck it free or refund you in full.

How to find your VW Touareg serial number

Follow these steps to locate the serial on your Volkswagen radio.

Step 1

Remove your radio

Remove the surrounding trim and slide the unit out of the dashboard. Depending on your model use a flat-head screwdriver, a prying tool, or radio release keys inserted into the corner slots. You do not need to disconnect any wires.

Step 2

Find your serial number on the label

The serial is on a sticker on the side or rear of the casing. All VW serials start with VWZ and are 14 characters long. VWZ1Z is an RCD 300, VWZ2Z an RCD 310, VWZ4Z an RCD 500/510 and VWZ6Z an RNS navigation unit.
